2012 Kick Butt Columbus was March 31

Our first event of 2012 was Kick Butt Columbus. This annual city-wide highway ramp cleanup event is hosted by the City of Columbus and Keep Columbus Beautiful. Friends of the Hilltop gathered on this chilly morning to pick up cigarette butts and other litter around the I-70 on-ramp at Sullivant Avenue. We chose this particular on-ramp because of our Sullivant Avenue End-2-End Initiative. Under the leadership of Nuisance Abatement Chairman Dan Downing and Jim Lashbrook, we did a thorough job of ridding the ramp area of trash and debris. Supplies were provided by Keep Columbus Beautiful and refreshments were provided by volunteers.

Our 2012 Earth Day Event was held on April 22

Friends of the Hilltop has observed Earth Day each year with a special event for more than a decade. This year, we hosted a cleanup of the Hilltop Neighborhood Park at 2105 West Broad Street and the surrounding neighborhood. Volunteers collected trash from the park and the surrounding area, removed dead plant material and other debris from all planting beds, trimmed, weeded, edged, and prepared planting beds to receive annual plants. Supplies were provided by Keep Columbus Beautiful. Refreshments were provided by volunteers. This effort was led by Friends of the Hilltop Beautification Chairman John Lowry. Special thanks to the AutoZone at the corner of Whitethorne Avenue and West Broad Street for allowing volunteers to park in the parking lot and use the facilities and the dumpster. Remember to support businesses that support the community.

West Broad Clean Sweep/Arbor Day Event was April 28

The annual West Broad Clean Sweep was held on April 28 in conjunction with our Arbor Day celebration. This annual event is a partnership with the Franklinton Community. The focus is on West Broad Street from the eastern boundary of Franklinton all the way west to Wilson Road and beyond. A number of other Hilltop organizations also participated in the 2012 Clean Sweep and the event was a huge success. More than a ton of litter and refuse was collected on this day. Thank you to Keep Columbus Beautiful and others for providing supplies and other support for this event. Special thanks to our friends in Franklinton who stand shoulder to shoulder with us as we work to exhibit west side pride and demonstrate to residents and visitors that we are interested in maintaining a neat and tidy community that we can all be proud to call home.

Hilltop Neighborhood Park Planting Day was May 19

Friends of the Hilltop held its annual planting day on May 19. Volunteers met at Hilltop Neighborhood Park at 2105 West Broad Street to plant the flower beds and spruce up the park. The event started at 9:00 with a safety briefing and the distribution of orange vests for all volunteers. A good sized group of volunteers collected litter, removed weeds and debris, and cleaned gutters around the intersection. Friends of the Hilltop's adoption of the on-ramp has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) with a large green permanent metal sign acknowledging that the group has agreed to help keep this gateway to the Hilltop neat and tidy. The 2012 Karen Whitman Hilltop, USA Award presented to Earl Potts

Karen Whitman was a lifelong resident of the Greater Hilltop area and a true champion of our community. She was a member of Friends of the Hilltop since 2007 and was active in many other Hilltop organizations over the years. Karen passed away in 2011 and the Friends of the Hilltop Board of Trustees decided to create an award that would allow for the perpetuation of Karen's memory and legacy while also providing the opportunity to recognize long time activists and leaders in the Hilltop community. Kaen's family has been a part of this process and we are honored that they allow us to recognize Karen in this way. The award is presented at the annual Friends of the Hilltop Beautification Awards Ceremony. The 2012 winner of the Karen Whitman Hilltop, USA Award was Mr. Earl Potts. Mr. Potts is a lifelong resident of the Hilltop and has served the community admirably for decades through organizations such as the Greater Hilltop Area Commission, the Greater Hilltop CDC, the Hilltop Reunion Committee, and the Hilltop Historical Society, just to name a few. Mr. Potts was presented with a plaque recognizing him as the 2012 winner of the Karen Whitman Hilltop, USA Award at the ceremony by Friends of the Hilltop President Gary L. Baker, II after comments were made by Karen's brother.
